According to the latest news around the Internet, mobile-phone carrier Verizon Wireless has some big plans when it comes to the Droid name. While we’re considering the Motorola Sholes as being the only handset to carry the Droid name, it seems that the entire series of Android handsets that will reach Big Red’s airwaves will come with this moniker.
However, the Motorola Sholes is still expected to come to the market as the Motorola Droid, and it is also said to be the only Android-based device that will be called plain and simple Droid. However, the October 28 event is reportedly connected with the launch of this device, while the others might be unveiled / released during November.
And, since we’ve mentioned other Android phones that should come to Verizon, the HTC Desire, a handset that has been long rumored to be heading to Big Red’s offering, is now said to come as the Droid Eris. Moreover, a possible announcement date for the device has been also spotted, and that might be November 6. According to Engadget, the handset is not likely to be released that day.
The branding of an entire series of handsets as Droid does not seem to be something very surprising in the end. Not only would the Android platform suggest that Verizon might go for a similar naming of its handsets powered by the OS, but the Droid Does campaign the carrier already kicked off also hinted a little at some phone capabilities that were unlikely to be packed within the same handset.
Even so, it remains to be seen whether these latest rumors on Verizon’s Android-powered phones will pan out. Hopefully, the carrier will unveil more than one such device in the near future, something that many are already expecting, and the three rumored handsets for the company, namely the Motorola Droid (Sholes), the HTC Desire (Droid Eris) and Motorola Calgary, will all become official very soon.
